RETIN-A (Tretinoin)

  • Tretinoin is a retinoic acid. It is different from over-the-counter retinols. It is a form of vitamin A. Retin-A is considered the base of the skin care pyramid.  There are three strengths: .025, .05, and 0.1%.
  • It is used to improve the quality of your skin; you will visibly see a difference in your skin after approximately 3 months. Typically, your skin will appear smoother, and your skin tones will appear more even. It will thicken both the Epidermis and the Dermis. This is responsible for the wrinkle reduction you may see.
  • Retin-A cannot be used in anyone who is pregnant or considering pregnancy.
  • To begin your Retin-A, wash your face and pat dry, you will then apply the smallest amount possible to your entire face and spread it out until it is absorbed (a pea sized application). Nighttime application is best. Avoid the use of night creams that state they are “anti-aging” since they may contain a retinol.
  • Moisturize your skin after your Retin-A is dry (10 seconds).
  • Early usage of Retin-A may result in red, flaky, dry skin. This will always go away. This will resolve in approximately 6 weeks. If you are too red and flaky then back off to a Monday, Wednesday, Friday usage schedule for 1 month and then work your way up to an everyday schedule. Every skin type can eventually tolerate Retin-A.
  • You will become sensitive to the sun while using Retin-A and should always wear sunblock. You will also notice that your skin may be more reactive to waxing, facials and laser type procedures. Stopping your Retin-A for several days prior to these procedures may reduce your sensitivity.
